What is a Planetary Gearbox?
Think of a planetary gearbox as an arrangement of gears that can transmit power and control speed with precision. It's made up of main components: a sun gear in the centre, planet gears that revolve around the sun gear, the planet carrier and an outer ring gear. How Does it Work?
The sun gear sits in the centre and is connected to the part that receives power. The planet gears, which are positioned around the sun gear, mesh with both the sun gear and the outer ring gear and are mounted on the planet carrier. The planet carrier is connected to the output shaft which is the part that delivers power.
As the input rotates the sun gear this drives the planet gears against the fixed outer ring gear. The reaction against the ring gear causes the planet gears to orbit around the sun gear. This motion, in turn, makes the planet carrier rotate. By changing the size of the gears and the number of planet gears, you can control the speed and output torque.
